Outlook: Energy transition in the European Union
The European Union (EU) continues to lead the global energy transition, taking decisive steps to secure its economic and industrial competitiveness, reduce fossil fuel import dependency and enhance energy security. Its commitment to the transition is embodied by ambitious climate targets, as well as landmark policies and plans such as the Clean Industrial Deal, the Action Plan for Affordable Energy and REPowerEU.
End-use sector decarbonisation, however, remains a considerable challenge to progress, owing to slowing electric vehicle adoption, resistance from hard-to-decarbonise industries and limited success in building renovation. Meanwhile, the global climate agenda faces growing headwinds as political shifts threaten to undermine international unity on climate commitments.
